On October 15th in the Canton High Gym the Canton Unified Basketball team squared off against the Milford Scarlet Hawks. It was a beautiful day to be in the gym as it has since became extremely cold outside.

 

Before we get into the summary of the game I will provide you with some background information about this team. Unified basketball gives student with special needs the opportunity of high school sports. It is a blend of special education students, varsity basketball players, and any student who wants to help out and receive community service hours.  In regards to the performance of the team they haven’t lost a game since 2016, that is nearly 2 years.

 

Monday’s result was no different Canton won a game that came down to the wire with Canton pulling away at the end to win 53-43. It was an offensive portrayal from both sides as both teams were scoring in a variety of ways. I am happy to report  that every single member of the Canton team scored at least one point.

 

The environment for these games are amazing. It is such a good feeling to see a smile come across a players face when they score and hear the crowd erupted. In addition to the parents in the crowd, there were special guest appearances from Mr. Folan, Mrs. Shore, and Mrs. Cavanaugh. We hope that as the season goes on that the student section will grow, to show support for this awesome program and team.

 

Unified Sports has personally be a life-changing experience for me. I have been involved in it since my sophomore year, and found out about it through Coach Gordy and the basketball program. I have played basketball my entire life and it feels amazing to share the knowledge I have obtained through my basketball experience. Anyone who needs community service or wants to get involved in Unified sports should definitely join the team, it is a super fun time!
